For the past 18 months, the 140 members of the newly organized Morris Union Jointure Commission Education Association (MUJCEA) have been working without a contract. Although approximately 180 districts statewide have staff working under the terms of an expired contract, only the MUJCEA and the Educational Secretaries Association of Parsippany-Troy Hills are working without any contract whatsoever.
“In bargaining a first contract for a local association, generally the boards of education are willing to put in writing the terms and conditions under which the staff currently work,” said NJEA Field Representative Al Ramey, who works with the MUJCEA. “It is troubling that the Commission is resistant to guaranteeing those terms and conditions in writing.”
The Morris Union Jointure Commission provides services for 360 autistic students ranging in age from three to 21 years old. Students come from 29 sending districts across five counties, Morris, Essex, Union, Somerset, and Hunterdon.
The school is tuition-based and financially sound, according to the superintendent.

The Morris Union Jointure Commission Education Association represents 140 members, including teachers, therapists, nurses, and transition coordinators.
In April 2008, we organized into a union to help formalize the terms and conditions under which we work. We are working to settle a fair contract that attracts and retains quality staff.
We love our school and we care about our students. They are our top priority.
